Good For You's second album all about fun
20 October 2003

Oakland, California’s Good For You are that most desirable and pleasing sort of rock and roll treasure: obscure and unknown, extreme, deep, eclectic, and cool to the core.
Their new (and second) album, Neurotic Showering Habits, flies all over the map from garage rock to punk to Japanese goof-rock to psychedelic adventurism, at various moments bringing to mind The Feelies, Great Plains, Swell Maps, Pixies, Thirteenth Floor Elevators, Boredoms, Wire’s first LP… and on and on.
It takes some time spent with this disc to get the underlying aesthetic that holds it all together, but it is there to find if you want to.
Good For You, formerly a trio, is now a stripped down duo of singer/songwriter/guitarist Peter Nochisaki and drummer Jake Hartigan. Nochisaki also heads Oakland’s Good Forks records and plays or has played with Continuous Peasant, The Bill Holdens, and various punk/post-punk bands in the San Diego area. Hartigan was a founding member of Good For You along with Nochisaki and former bassist Jessica Cowley—she also guests on the album. Other interesting guests including Gar Wood (Hot Snakes) and Stoo Odom (The Graves Brothers Deluxe, Subarachnoid Space).
Neurotic Showering Habits is a wild ride of a disc, from its retro-wave opening number, 5 Bucks, right on through the final (listed) track—The Shotgun, A Steak Knife, And A Mouse—which sounds like The Stooge’s I Wanna Be Your Dog overlaid with The Monster Mash. A bit of patience will let you discover a tasty, bonus instrumental track, Superfun, hidden within a 20 minute stretch of silence at the end of the record.
Nochisaki and Hartigan have created the most playful indierock record I’ve heard in 2003. Highly recommended. | Good For You | | Good Forks records | | CD from Amazon.com | | top of page |
