Norway's Kaospilot get US release for debut

Hard music meant to be listened to with tenderness

Just as a massive, fire-breathing monster would need to take breaths now and then—or it just wouldn’t seem realistic—Norway’s five-piece Kaospilot punctuate their sonic metal assault with anthropomorphic respites of quiet and gentleness. And like the in-breath of said monster, the quiet bits aren’t very relaxing. But they do provide a measure of context and realism... this fire-breathing monster has muscles, tendons, moods, and desires.
The Drøbak (south of Oslo) band’s recent, self-titled disc appeared in June on Level Plane, a small US label out of Philadelphia. It’s a remarkable debut for its musical maturity and its raw power, bringing to mind uncompromising, deep, heavy rock acts such as Head Of David, Big Black, Orchid, and Reversal Of Man.
The mini-album’s 11 brief tracks carry sci-fi/militaristic titles like Eleventh Hour Tactics, Process Is Set, and Robots Took On The Outside Of Dogs. The CD begins with an extended monotone scream of feedback, pregnant with tension and possibilities... then a quick 1-2-3-4 on the snare and the assault descends like the heavens opening and you’re locked onto this night ride and there’s no getting off it.
Kaospilot’s sonic melodrama blooms like bristles of razorwire, but just below this dangerous surface, and with complexity, balance, masterful playing, and subtlety, the album offers a profound musical satisfaction of the sort you might expect from a Grieg symphony.
The whole mind-numbing experience comes and goes in a mere 26 minutes. These kids are tapped in. Let’s hope they channel more of it. | Kaospilot | | Level Plane | | Process Is Set (full length MP3) | | CD from Amazon.com | | top of page |
