Luna side project due in May
24 March 2003

Dean Wareham, founder in the mid ’80s of Galaxie 500 and in the early ’90s of Luna, continues a two year streak of exceptional pop this May with the release of a duet album with Luna bassist Britta Phillips. Tony Visconti (David Bowie, T Rex, The Moody Blues) produced the 11 song set and played guitar and keyboards, and contributed some lush, ’60s-pop string arrangements. The artist billing for the set is simply Britta Phillips & Dean Wareham.
L'Avventura, as the new album is called, includes three original songs from Wareham and two from Phillips, along with covers of Angel Corpus Christi (connection: Wareham played guitar on their quirky cover of Serge Gainsbourg’s Je T’aime blended with Lou Reed’s I Wanna Boogie With You), The Doors, Madonna, Opal, The Silver Jews, and Buffy St. Marie.
Along with Phillips, Wareham, and Visconti, musicians on the LP are drummer Matt Johnson (who’s played with Jeff Buckley and Beth Orton), vibraphonist Sean McCaul (McCaul Vaillant—with whom Bowie guitarist Reeves Gabrel has recorded), and The Scorchio String Quartet (they played on Bowie’s most recent album).
Wareham says of the sessions, which finished up in January, “Working with Tony Visconti was great. He is like a scientist. He knows exactly how to solve every problem that you encounter in the studio, and got me to sing better than I ever have.” Wareham continues, “I confess that I was very nervous when David Bowie dropped by. He gave us a few suggestions, but mostly entertained us with some amusing stories.”
