The Coral to hit US shores
20 January 2003
image
Young Liverpool psychedelic band The Coral have caused quite the stir in Europe. Playing together since their early teens, none of the six members is now over 21. They put out their first single about 18 months ago, and released their self-titled full-length debut for the UK last summer.
The album immediately received the honor of a Mercury Prize nomination, and remains a best seller. It came out on Deltasonic Records, set up in 2001 by former Shack drummer Alan Wills just for the band. Deltasonic has released most of The Coral’s material, but now Sony has latched on to the band and is helping bring them Stateside.
The Coral are gearing up for their debut US tour in March, following the US domestic release of their album on 18 February. Reviewers have compared The Coral to an odd catalog of artists including The Teardrop Explodes, The Beach Boys, Roy Orbison, The Pogues, and Syd Barrett. Meanwhile, the dudes throw in the occasional sea shanty and Wailers cover.
If you live in North America and can’t wait till February, you can pick up the album now from Amazon UK—check our link.
