DIY compilation features underground stars

Music writer and self-described 'regular guy' Jason Ziemniak had a notion last October to put together a little compilation CD. He told Rockbites, “I just wanted to document where all my friends were in their lives, to have something to look back at when we were old. So I gave them all song titles and told them to write songs.”
Ziemniak continued, “But none of my (lazy) friends ended up writing songs. Since I had a huge list of song titles and nothing to do with them, I wrote the musicians in my record collection and asked them.”
And a surprising number of those musicians—among them underground stars Mike Watt (Minutemen, fIREHOSE, Banyan), Nels Cline (avant-garde guitarist), and Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth)—said yes... leading up to last week’s release of a 22-track DIY compilation titled You’ve Got Your Orders on Chromepeeler Records. So many musicians said yes, in fact, that Ziemniak will release a second volume of the series as soon as the end of this year.
Where did the money come from? “The artists put up the funds for recording. I told them that it didn’t matter what they recorded on, from a boom box to a studio. I was more interested in their musical reaction to the title. And the songs did run the gamut from boom box to studio.”
The artists and titles on volume one of You’ve Got Your Orders:

  1. House Of Low Culture: Showtime At The Apollo 9
  2. Neil Fallon: Instant Winner
  3. Nels Cline: X-Ray My Dreams
  4. Erik Larson: Smile For The Soul-Stealing Camera
  5. Bluebird: Late Night Moan
  6. Harry Seitz: Sign Language Tourettes
  7. Chronicles Of Lemur Mutation: Hot Licks For Shredders
  8. Mark Arm: Coke Limo
  9. Betty's Trash: Broken Mirror Music
10. Twink: Not Enough Crayons For Everyone
11. Jedediah Parish: The Sons Of Lee Marvin
12. Godstomper: Gameshow Contestant Flip-Out
13. Weasel Walter: Shaking Hands And Kissing Babies Covered In Bacteria
14. Chris Crude: You Can Get Away With Any Crime If You Just Run Fast Enough
15. Bliss Blood: Vaudeville Distorted
16. Hella: Dance Of The Drunken Siberian
17. Mike Gent: Point A Finger
18. Badgadget: K.A.P.L
19. Mike Watt, Thurston Moore, and Thalia Ferriera: Like A Ghost On Fire
20. Beehive & The Barracudas: Smut Merchant Of Venice
21. Johnette Napalitano: Memory Of A Liar
22. IDX1274: Tickle Party #2

The tentative lineup for volume two includes Nikki Sudden (The Swell Maps), Stephen Brodsky (Cave In), Nathan Larson (Shudder To Think), Jonathan Segel (Camper Van Beethoven), Ken Stringfellow (Posies, R.E.M.), Eye (Boredoms), Dead And Gone, Tobi Vail (Bikini Kill), Slim Moon (Kill Rock Stars), Mary Timony (Helium), Sam Coomes (Quasi), Simeon Coxe (Silver Apples), Andy Cairns (Therapy?), Black Lipstick, Matt Talbott (Hum, Centaur), Sonny Vincent (Testors), Amps For Christ, Jenny Hoyston (Erase Errata), Vaz, Eddie Angel (Los Straitjackets), Elliott Sharp, Brett Rosenberg, Mike Prophet (Pg.99, Mannequin), Phil Puleo (Cop Shoot Cop, Swans), Young People, Jim Coleman (Cop Shoot Cop, Phylr), and Greg Weeks.
Ziemniak told Rockbites, “It doesn’t kill me that Wayne Kramer of the MC5 was too busy to do a song but at least I asked him... And because I asked him, his manager gave me contact info to musicians I wouldn’t have normally been able to contact. I guess the point is: this could be you. All I did was come up with an idea and run with it.”
You can pick up volume one of You’ve Got Your Orders now, directly from Chromepeeler Records. Check their site for how to buy. | Chromepeeler Records | | Sayonarabeat Graphics | | top of page |
