Blow Up Hollywood to perform live soundtrack
21 April 2003

NYC-based Zen pop project Blow Up Hollywood will perform an original score to the Danish cycling film Stars And Watercarriers on Friday, 9 May at The Anthology Film Archives in New York city.
The film covers the 1973 Giro D’Italia and comes from documentary director Jorgen Leth (Sunday In Hell). The band, who produced and released their self-titled debut album last year, are an uncompromising and completely anonymous collective whose music is oddly mind-altering (see our mini-review from our top 20 of 2002, link below).
Live performance to silent films has been a popular combination for decades, but recent years have seen a growing trend for rock bands to join the fun. Last year Yo La Tengo toured with a soundtrack show composed for underwater sequences filmed from 1927 to 1978 by French visionary Jean Painlevé. Just last week, Nashville’s Lambchop performed at the San Francisco International Film Festival to the 1927 silent film Sunrise by Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau. Montréal’s Godspeed You Black Emperor employ an original film backdrop to their show. Tom Verlaine of Television worked with guitarist Jimmy Ripp on a project two years ago called Music For Film. And The Alloy Orchestra, which features Roger Miller of Mission Of Burma and Birdsongs Of The Mesozoic, frequently perform to silent films in the Boston and New York areas.
The Blow Up Hollywood show takes place at 9 pm on 9 May at The Anthology Film Archives at 32 Second Avenue and Second Street in New York.
You can catch Blow Up Hollywood at a regular, non-film, show on 11 May at the Europa club in Brooklyn (98-104 Meserole Ave at the corner of Manhattan Avenue). | Blow Up Hollywood | | Bicycle Film Festival | | Europa Club | | Rockbites top 20 of 2002 | | DVD from Bike Nashbar | | top of page |
