Rock & Roll Library’s 2nd annual Lesson contest
5 March 2002

The Boston, Massachusetts based Rock & Roll Library (RRL) is a non-profit Web project aiming to build a definitive online collection of lyrics, recording history, and popular music biography in the context of rock music’s social significance and impact.
They also work to promote music education, and education in all subject areas through music; and hope to construct a physical library to hold rock & roll photographs, videos, original lyrics, and writings.
Last year the RRL sponsored its first contest, in which teachers were invited to build lesson plans based around one particular song: Scarecrow by Melissa Etheridge, which tells the story of the 1998 attack, torture, and murder of gay college student Matthew Shepherd.
The RRL’s second annual Lesson Contest, now underway, has a new and more open premise. Teachers are invited to submit original classroom lessons, from any academic subject area, built around one or more pieces of music of their own choosing. The lesson subject may be anything from gay & lesbian issues to the music industry to math topics. But, as always, music must be an integral component of the lesson.
The lesson contest serves to promote one of the RRL’s goals: to build an online archive of music-based classroom lessons available for any teacher worldwide to download and use for free.
The Rock & Roll Library has won endorsements from Amnesty International, The Matthew Shepherd Foundation, GLAAD, the NAACP, and other rights organizations. The grand prize for this year’s Lesson Contest is $500 to the lesson author. Anyone over the age of 18 may enter—you don’t have to be a teacher by profession.
RRL sponsors including Harvard University and Home Depot supported a John Lennon mural project last year in Boston. The RRL is seeking new sponsors, hoping to raise the prize amount for next year and to support other initiatives. If you would like to learn more about sponsoring their work, contact Julie at (+1) 617-779-8762 or send email to alc@rocklibrary.com. | Rock & Roll Library | | 2nd annual lesson contest | | Teachers page at RRL | | top of page |
