Michigan Womyn’s Music Fest announces 2002 lineup
19 March 2002

This summer will see the 27th annual Michigan Womyn’s Music Festival, staged near Walhalla in northern Michigan with camping on 650 private acres adjacent to a national forest. The six day event (13-18 August) is run entirely by and only for females. It features workshops and special events as well as a full slate of music performances.
Tied together by just the criterion of gender, the MWMF lineup always encompasses a wide musical spectrum. This year’s roster ranges from fashionable Durham, North Carolina feminist label Mr. Lady acts The Butchies and Le Tigre to feminist pop legends including Holly Near and Cheryl Wheeler.
And thanks to its nature, the MWMF is always a locus of controversy. This year sees a renewed effort by male-to-female transsexuals and their supporters to overturn the festival’s 'womyn-born-womyn-only' admission policy. Strap-on.org, a “girl-positive, queer-positive, sex-positive online community,” has organized a protest and a petition against the policy, while the MWMF has responded with a series of statements and press releases.
