Second annual MAG benefit in San José next weekend
7 June 2002

San José experimental band Xiu Xiu, who released their debut album Knife Play in February on Olympia label 5 Rue Christine, have organized a second annual benefit concert for global landmine removal. Proceeds will go to the Manchester, England based Mines Advisory Group (MAG), a member organization of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL).
Xiu Xiu member Corey McCulloch found himself motivated to launch the MAG benefit series after a trip to Vietnam, where he saw child after child missing a limb or an eye. Tens of thousands of civillians, a disproportionate number of them children, are mutilated or killed each year worldwide by landmines—most of them left over from past conflicts.
MAG estimates that active landmines are planted in 70 countries today. They train civilians how to clear them from populated areas throughout the world, focusing on the Laos-Vietnam border region
The upcoming benefit concert takes place starting the afternoon of Sunday the 16th at The Gallery in downtown San José (160 E. Virginia Street). Confirmed artists include The Sweet Science, Good For Cows, Ee, Tiny Bird Mouths, Juggz, Sharon Cheslow, Jorge Boehringer & Juliana Bright, and Corpus Callosum. | Xiu Xiu | | Xiu Xiu on 5RC | | Map to The Gallery | | MAG | | ICBL | | top of page |
