Jucifer’s second album ups the intensity

Athens, Georgia boyfriend/girlfriend duo play with the art of the extreme.

Formed in 1994 with the objective of becoming the sweetest, sweatiest, and dirtiest pop band in the world, Athens, Georgia duo Jucifer (Amber Valentine on vocals & guitar, Ed Livengood on drums and samples) Tuesday released their second full length, I Name You Destroyer.
It’s on Velocette Records, which picked up the pieces after Southern Rock institution Capricorn folded a couple of years ago, and includes 15 tracks of ultra-lurid heavy rock—the musical equivalent of a day-glo velvet Elvis or a baby in a war zone—with Valentine’s hyper-angelic vocals holding sway against her own thrash guitar and against Livengood’s John Bonham-like pounding and crashing—not to mention against his threatening, somewhat disturbing electronics.
Jucifer began as a trio with Livengood on bass, but the departure of their drummer saw Livengood move to drums and samples and loops. In their eight years they’ve picked up a loyal cult fan base, and have won the Best Heavy Rock/Loud Rock category for two years running from the Flagpole Athens Music Awards.
There’s a lot of range on I Name You Destroyer, from the (relatively) quiet ballad Surface Tension to the new-wave melodic-noise rocker Sea Blind to the death-core attack of Queen B. As with a velvet Elvis, the art here is right up front, on the surface. What you hear is what you get. Jucifer’s new LP gets an A+ for coolest heavy rock sound of 2002. Two bites out of five.

Rockbites ratings  5: life changing, 4: stunning, 3: captivating, 2: amusing, 1: annoying.

Jucifer (apart from the names, they have no connection to Oslo, Norway’s Gluecifer, also formed in 1994) head out on tour with The Melvins a week from today. The dates are
