Sciflyer release 3-track follow-up to debut mini-LP

Shoegazing is alive and well and vivid in Alameda.

With a personnel change and a move up from a ’70s-era analog tape machine to one from the ’80s, Alameda, California noise-trance 3-piece Sciflyler in April quietly released a three track CD-EP titled Melt. It’s the follow-up to their March, 2001 eponymous debut mini-album.
Heavy on the noise & reverb, light on the vocals, Sciflyer variously bring to mind Main, Spacemen 3, The Jesus And Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine, early Teenage Fanclub, and every other band that has reveled in the beauty of lush electricity.
On the new disc, when they cover Hüsker Dü’s Powerline (from the classic, essential New Day Rising LP), Sciflyer add about a minute to the length and replace Grant Hart’s searing vocal angst with a drugged out dreaminess—imbuing the song with an entirely different kind of tension.
Sciflyer have a knack for musical coyness. As trance, there’s not a lot changing measure to measure. As noise, you have to listen deeply to penetrate the dark fog. But in this context, which tends to lull and hypnotize the senses, they plant the occasional blinding red spark or landmine of blue light, adding a delicious, subtle, and very musical edge. It’s a pretty trippy effect, soothing while simultaneously making you just a bit hyper-alert.
Sciflyer are Steve Kennedy, ex Houseplants, and founder of Red Circus records, on vocals & guitars; his wife Kimberly, who as Kim Oberly played with Steve in Menthol, on bass. Their original drummer Larry 'Laurens' Campos left recently for personal reasons, replaced in time for Melt by Roger Chandler.
Sciflyer make introspective noise rock that gently invites your focus and rewards you with hypnogogic beauty. Four bites out of five.

Rockbites ratings  5: life changing, 4: stunning, 3: captivating, 2: amusing, 1: annoying.

You can order the Melt EP or Sciflyer’s debut mini-LP from their Website, or from a few other sources they list. The band will tour the western US, including California, Colorado, Nevada, Arizona, and perhaps Texas, in August, with details on their site. | Sciflyer | | Sciflyer on MP3.com | | Red Circus records | | top of page |
