London based Cherry Red Records, parent to Analog Baroque, él, British Steel, R.P.M., Zebra, and other imprints, also publishes rock books. David Parker’s 2001 work, Random Precision: Recording the Music of Syd Barrett 1965-1974, just received the honor of being named Book Of The Year by the UK’s Record Collector Magazine.
Roger Keith Syd Barrett was the original lead guitarist and a founding member of Pink Floyd. He was the principle songwriter for the first Pink Floyd album, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, and is commonly accepted as the primary creative force behind the band’s sound. He left Pink Floyd in early 1968 to pursue a brief solo career before withdrawing completely from the music business in the mid-1970s. Barrett’s influence on rock has never abated, and may be stronger now than ever.
Parker’s new book details, for the first time, all of Barrett’s recording sessions—from his first amateur tapings with Pink Floyd in 1965 up to his abandoned solo sessions at Abbey Road Studios in 1974.
Parker was co-editor of the respected Syd Barrett fanzine Chapter 24. He spent four years researching and writing the book which is based principally on information from the official archives at EMI Records and Abbey Road Studios.
The book, written in diary format, includes exclusive interviews with many of the producers and engineers who worked with Barrett, including Peter Jenner, Andrew King, Peter Bown, Alan Parsons, and John Leckie. The book also features rare photographs and illustrations, many previously unpublished.
There’s no distribution yet in North America for the book, but you can order it directly from the Cherry Red Website. The rest of their catalog is rather interesting as well, and for the most part available only in the UK (or by mail order). It includes titles covering The Rolling Stones, Johnny Thunders, the Mod scene, Death Metal and Black Metal, Pink Floyd, Mott The Hoople, The Small Faces, and more. | Cherry Red Records books | | Syd Barrett fan site | | Syd Barret CDs from Amazon US | | top of page |
