San José, California experimental quartet Xiu Xiu (they took their name from Joan Chen’s 1998 film Xiu Xiu: The Sent-Down Girl) are set to release their debut LP late next month on CD format on the 5 Rue Christine label, and on vinyl LP on Absolutely Kosher. Between now and then they’re on the road up and down the west coast of the the US and Canada (dates below).
The band—founder Jamie Stewart along with Cory McCulloch, Yvonne Chen, and Lauren Andrews—are also working on a CD-EP for Absolutely Kosher, and will put out a split 10" with San Francisco noisemongers Deerhoof later this year on Springman Records.
Xiu Xiu may well be the most socially responsible of the current crop of experimental rock acts—last year McCulloch organized a series of three land-mine removal benefits in the San Francisco area, benefitting the Manchester, UK based Mines Advisory Group (MAG), a member organization of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL).
