11 February 2002

Ubiquitous San Francisco producer Dan 'The Automator' Nakamura—he’s worked with Jon Spencer, Stereolab, Kid Koala, and The Beastie Boys, and has midwifed a dizzying array of acts including Gorillaz, Deltron 3030, Handsome Boy Modeling School, and, most recently, the hilarious Lovage: Music To Make Love To Your Old Lady By—has announced his first remixes album.
Titled Wanna Buy A Monkey?, it will be Nakamura’s first CD credited to him per se, and his third full length release in 12 months. He says the new set “...is really two things, a selection of songs I enjoy that are relatively undiscovered or overlooked, and some of my more obscure remixes...
“The whole thing about mix records is that they’re so serious. I didn’t want to go there...
“This is a chance for people to get a look into my head,”
The new set will include tracks by Tortoise, Zero 7, Air, De La Soul, Dilated Peoples, Doves, and many others. It comes out simultaneously in the US and the UK on Sequence Records next week. The US version will be a single disc, the UK version a double disc, according to Amazon.
