St. Thomas offers preview of Lee Hazlewood tribute 18 April 2002 For a first taste, you can download a free, full-length MP3 of St. Thomas interpretation of Hazlewoods The Railroad, available until the end of April, from City Slangs MP3 Club. Check our link. 72 year old Barton Lee Hazlewood (he turns 73 in July)whose 1967 duet with Nancy Sinatra, Some Velvet Morning, still gets airtime in clubs and on college radiohas seen his songs covered by Petula Clark, Einsturzende Neubauten, Lisa Germano, The Jesus And Mary Chain, Dusty Springfield, and many others. On hearing the new St. Thomas cover, Hazlewood was all smiles. He said, If I heard that on the air I wouldnt believe I wrote it. No, I know I wrote it, but I like that... Mine is straight ahead, but thats a strange little song to choose to do... The feels better than the song. And the artist is better than the original artist! It didnt depress me, I just wish I had that feel on mine! The forthcoming tribute collection reveals many Hazlewood fansCalexico, Evan Dando, Lambchop, Kid Loco, St. Etienne, and more.
