St. Thomas offers preview of Lee Hazlewood tribute
18 April 2002

25 year old Oslo, Norway country/western/folk singer/songwriter Thomas Hansen aka St. Thomas is among nearly two dozen artists contributing to a forthcoming tribute to Oklahoma pop legend Lee Hazlewood. Berlin’s City Slang records has marked 3 June as the European release date for the set, titled Total Lee - The Songs Of....
For a first taste, you can download a free, full-length MP3 of St. Thomas’ interpretation of Hazlewood’s The Railroad, available until the end of April, from City Slang’s MP3 Club. Check our link.
72 year old Barton Lee Hazlewood (he turns 73 in July)—whose 1967 duet with Nancy Sinatra, Some Velvet Morning, still gets airtime in clubs and on college radio—has seen his songs covered by Petula Clark, Einsturzende Neubauten, Lisa Germano, The Jesus And Mary Chain, Dusty Springfield, and many others. On hearing the new St. Thomas cover, Hazlewood was all smiles. He said, “If I heard that on the air I wouldn’t believe I wrote it. No, I know I wrote it, but I like that... Mine is straight ahead, but that’s a strange little song to choose to do... The feel’s better than the song. And the artist is better than the original artist! It didn’t depress me, I just wish I had that feel on mine!”
The forthcoming tribute collection reveals many Hazlewood fans—Calexico, Evan Dando, Lambchop, Kid Loco, St. Etienne, and more. The tracklist is
  1. Lambchop - I’m Glad I Never
  2. Madrugada feat. Neil MCNasty - Come On Home To Me
  3. The Webb Brothers - Some Velvet Morning
  4. Calexico feat. Valerie Leulliot - Sundown, Sundown
  5. Johnny Dowd - Sleep In The Grass
  6. St Etienne - Got It Together Again
  7. St Thomas - The Railroad
  8. Jarvis Cocker & Richard Hawley - A Cheat
  9. Erlend Oye - No Train To Stockholm
10. The Amazing Pilots - Soul’s Island
11. Kathryn Williams - Easy & Me
12. Tindersticks - My Autumns Done Come
13. Stephen Jones & Luke Scott - We All Make The Little Flowers Grow
14. Calvin Johnson & Mark Pickerel - Sand
15. Evan Dando & Sabrina Brooke - Summer Wine
16. Kid Loco Feat. Tim Keegan - If It’s Monday Morning

St. Thomas began a European/UK tour on Tuesday promoting his second album, I’m Coming Home, released this past winter for Europe and out 7 May in North America. He’s opening for Nashville’s Lambchop, who released their new album Is A Woman in February. See below for the dates.
Hazlewood, meanwhile, is about to follow up his oddly titled 1998 album Farmisht, Flatulence, Origami, ARF!!! And Me—which appeared on Sonic Youth’s Smells Like Records—with a new set on City Slang due 3 June and titled For Every Solution There Is A Problem. Hazlewood is in Europe now publicizing that record as well as a new book.
