17 April 2002

Legendary Aberdeen, Washington power/noise trio The Melvins, the band that—starting in 1984—inspired Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Mudhoney, and Soundgarden (among many others), yesterday released a new studio LP, their 16th, on Alameda, California’s Ipecac Recordings. It’s titled Hostile Ambient Takeover, and the band are promoting the hell out of it with a massive Australia/New Zealand/US tour that begins Friday and runs into the summer. For most down-under dates The Melvins will be supporting Tool, while on US dates through at least 25 May, Seattle five-piece Dead Low Tide (a side project of some Murder City Devils members) will open.
Ipecac records—founded by Greg Werckman, formerly with Alternative Tentacles records, and Mike Patton, in Mr. Bungle and Fantômas and ex-front man for Faith No More—will also release this year a limited edition series of seven 7" Melvins singles, one for each of the tracks on the new LP.
