Kaito release Montigola Underground EP
15 April 2002

Kaito—four kids from Norwich, UK fronted by the vivid, riveting, waif-like Nikki Colk—present exceedingly complex song structures hidden within a framework of trashy, toy-instrument punk.
There’s something for everyone here, as in, say, a South Park episode, with endless layers of irony, pathos, jubilence, and creative invention shovel-fed to our gaping mouths.
Kaito deliver cheerleader screams, helter-skelter guitar, and a 4/4 beat for the children; extrapolations of ’60s psychedelia and ’70s US garage & UK punk for the adults; and complex, intellectually satisfying neo-classical constructions for the musicologist.
But the point with Kaito is simply raw invention and joy: Kaito make ya smile.
On 19 March the band released a US-only, seven track EP titled Montigola Underground. It follows their debut album You’ve Seen Us... You Must Have Seen Us..., released last summer on London’s Fierce Panda label for the UK and on Modesto, California’s Devil In The Woods for the US. You can’t find the EP yet on the major online music stores, but check our link.
(Wondering about the EP’s name? Monticola—with a 'c'—is a variety of white pine tree found in northern California, as is Devil In The Woods. Just a guess....)
The new EP contains four previously unreleased tracks (Sweet Allie, Fresno Song, Non-Descript, and Trailous; plus three from Kaito’s debut album (Bow Wow, Shoot Shoot, and Go). Between the EP and the LP I can’t recommend one over the other as an intro to Kaito: you’ll either love or hate—and need or not—both.
Kaito recorded the songs on both records at Norfolk’s Sickroom Studios, with Owen Turner (ex Magoo) and Aaron Espiroza. As with breakthrough acts Chicks On Speed or Lolita Storm, a bit of time with Kaito makes you realize just how pedestrian and lame most of today’s music really is. Thank you, Kaito. Four bites out of five.

Rockbites ratings  5: life changing, 4: stunning, 3: captivating, 2: amusing, 1: annoying.

Kaito’s next release, due sometime this year, will be some new songs on a 7" vinyl single on Madrid, Spain’s Elefant Records. | Kaito | | Devil In The Woods | | Go (full length MP3) | | Kaito discs from Midheaven (US) | | Elefant Records | | top of page |
