Robyn Hitchcock, founder, songwriter, and front man for Cambridge, England’s legendary psychedelic pop act The Soft Boys, has contributed a track to an upcoming benefit album for breast cancer research. It is one of two albums due this fall from nonprofit UK organization Tribute.
Both LPs feature artists performing songs by ex Beatle Sir Paul McCartney, whose wife Linda died in 1998 after battling breast cancer.
The first album, titled Listen To What The Man Said, due 9 October in the UK, includes Hitchcock performing McCartney’s 1973 song Let Me Roll It. Other artists on the disc are The Finn Brothers, World Party, Matthew Sweet, Semisonic, Owsley, a collaboration between members of The Barenaked Ladies and The Lilac Time, Judybats, and others.
A second benefit album titled Coming Up is due 23 October from Tribute and features lesser known artists including The Jellybricks, Kyf Brewer, Star Collector, The Shazam, Cherry Twister, Phil Keaggy, and others.
Proceeds from sales of both albums will go to The Susan G. Koman Breast Cancer Foundation. Established nine years ago and headquartered in Dallas, Texas, the foundation operates internationally with more than 70,000 volunteers and has raised hundreds of millions of dollars so far for breast cancer research.
Robyn Hitchcock, meanwhile, is busy on a number of other projects including a new studio album with the reunited Soft Boys. Tracks for the not yet titled disc will likely include The Disconnection Of The Ruling Class, Sudden Town, Nemesis Beach, and I’m So Glad You Love Me. Hitchcock is also working on a novel, a short story for a collection edited by musician and horror writer Greg Kihn, and a new solo album.
The Soft Boys have two live shows set for the coming month: 15 September at Village Hall in Evershot, England; and 19 October with Pretty Things at Royal Festival Hall in London. | Tribute | | breast cancer info | | Robyn Hitchcock | | The Soft Boys on Matador | | bio | | discography | | top of page |
