Mecca Normal touring US, Canada with new songs
10 September 2001

Vancouver, British Columbia feminist/experimental duo Mecca Normal began a US/Canada tour over the weekend. It runs through 23 September, followed by a live radio appearance the 24th on Toronto station CIUT-FM.
Mecca Normal, who formed 15 years ago and have pursued their art and politics with little regard to commercial considerations, last put out an album in 1997 (Who Shot Elvis?, on the Matador label). Neither Jean Smith nor David Lester is in a hurry to release another LP, each pursuing writing careers and content to play new material live while working out the best arrangement for record distribution. One option they’re considering is to self-release an album through their Web site.
Through the 18th they’re playing eastern US and Canada dates with Unwound and The Thrones. On the 21st at Toronto’s El Mocambo they’re doing a tribute to Manchester, England’s The Fall. They plan to tour the western US and Canada in November.
