Full statement by Sonic Youth on ATP postponement
8 October 2001

On 1 October, New York city noise rock pioneers Sonic Youth, together with the Performing Arts department of the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), announced that the first ever US leg of the annual All Tomorrow’s Parties festival is postponed from 19-21 October until next spring. (As revealed last year in November, Sonic Youth are curating the event.) The new dates are 15-17 March 2002 (which unfortunately conflicts directly with the annual SXSW Music Festival—see next story); all tickets sold for the October 2001 dates will be honored.
ATP originated and continues to take place yearly on the southeast coast of England at the Camber Sands Holiday Centre. The US postponement in the wake of last month’s NYC/DC terror attacks parallels the recent cancellation of the first ever UK Farm Aid concert, which was to be held 27 October in Cardiff, Wales.
Because of technical problems, the original ATP postponement announcement carried last week by other music news outlets contained only about half of the full statement. Sonic Youth and UCLA have since then also edited the paragraphs that were publicized.
    Here’s the full, current statement

“To all concerned,

“After much deliberation, the All Tomorrows Parties organisation [and the] UCLA Performing Arts [department] along with curators Sonic Youth, have opted to postpone the dates of this event to a weekend in March 2002. It will still happen at the UCLA campus.

“Though Sonic Youth have been severely compromised (their studio exists at 'ground zero' and is, for the most part, inaccessible—some of us have been evacuated from our homes, some of us were directly under shower of the attack), the band was prepared to play ATP regardless. All involved were prepared to have the event address the crisis and to deliver proceeds in benefit. A gathering of musicians, artists and poets could only have been a positive thing.

“Personal travel anxieties, a complete halt to ticket sales and a general sense of unease due to the unpredictability of the Bush/Taliban conflict are the primary factors of our decision to postpone. Additionally, a sense of responsibility towards our children at this time for an environment of stability and reflection is indeed a priority.

“We apologise to the artists, their various agents, management, and personnel who invested valuable time and effort towards making this ATP a success. And of course to all our friends and fans ready to rock.

“We can only hope to see everyone springtime 2002 under more cheerful circumstances.

—sonic youth”

Organizers expect that about 85% of the bands that had been scheduled to play this month will return for the March event. The original full music lineup was Fred Anderson Trio, Derek Bailey, Bardo Pond, Boredoms, Bride Of No No, Cat Power, Destroy All Monsters, Neil Michael Hagerty, Le Tigre, Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks, Merzbow, Papa M, Quixotic, Satan’s Tornade, Smog, Sonic Youth, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Stereolab, Cecil Taylor, Television, Unwound, US Maple, and Eddie Vedder.
Last night Sonic Youth, Tom Verlaine (of Television), and others played a benefit concert at New York’s Bowery Ballroom for the not-for-profit Latin immigrant advocacy organization Asociación Tepeyac de New York, formed in 1997 under the auspices of the Archdiocese of New York. The organization is providing help and resources for families of victims of the WTC attacks. | All Tomorrow's Parties LA | | Asociación Tepeyac | | Sonic Youth | | top of page |
