Mecca Normal recording tenth full-length
29 October 2001

Vancouver, British Columbia feminist/experimental duo Mecca Normal are now tracking their tenth full length with producer Dave Dougham (singer for Swearing At Motorists, engineer for Guided By Voices). As recently as last month Jean Smith and David Lester wrote that neither were in a hurry to release another LP, but circumstances have evidently come together—at least on the recording side of the things.
The band have not announced whether the new album will be self-released through their Website or distributed by a label.
Mecca Normal, who formed 15 years ago and have pursued their art and politics with little regard to commercial considerations, last put out an album in 1997 (Who Shot Elvis?, on Matador). Aside from making noise, Smith and Lester each have successful writing careers.
Tracks slated for the upcoming (not yet titled) album include No Mind’s Eye, Family Swan, and What About The Boy—all three of which the band have been previewing on tour recently, along with other new songs.
Mecca Normal play a half dozen California dates starting 13 November in Claremont. The dates are

November
13 - Claremont (Pomona College)
14 - Los Angeles (The Knitting Factory)
15 - Los Angeles (Silverlake Lounge)
16 - Sacramento (Old Ironsides)
17 - San Francisco (Bottom Of The Hill)
19 - Santa Cruz (The Rio)
