Stratford 4 sign to Jetset, announce debut LP
25 October 2001

San Francisco lush noise act Stratford 4 got together a couple of years ago as front man (and music writer) Chris Streng’s previous band dissolved—in its wake also giving rise to the up-and-coming Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. In fact, it was BRMC who introduced Streng to Seattle musicians Jake Hosek (guitars) and Andrea Caturegli (drums), who themselves had recently gotten together with Sheetal Singh (bass).
A couple of self-released EPs had started a buzz in the bay area, with the music press making comparisons to The Velvet Underground and My Bloody Valentine. (Fair, but I’d suggest that the closest points of reference for this very interesting new band are The Church and The Telescopes.) In any case, it has all lead up to last month’s signing to New York indie label Jetset (home to David Candy, Black Box Recorder, Macha, ...), a showcase at this month’s rescheduled CMJ festival, and a debut album slated for 5 February 2002.
The LP will be titled The Revolt Against Tired Noises, the same name the band gave their debut EP. The new Revolt... will contain most of the tracks from the first EP and its follow-up, This Could Be Heaven. Look for an album review on Rockbites closer to the time of the LP’s release.
You can listen to seven of the band’s songs on their own streaming Web radio station, available from their site; or download a couple of MP3s. We’ve linked directly to Hydroplane, which will appear on the new album. | Stratford 4 | | Hydroplane (full length MP3) | | top of page |
