Farm Aid urges contributions to NYC farmer’s markets

Farm Aid, the annual benefit concert founded in 1985 by Neil Young, John Mellencamp, and Willie Nelson, took place this past Saturday in Noblesville, Indiana just north of Indianapolis.
As with most public events these days, organizers had debated among themselves until the last minute whether to hold it at all in light of the 11 September tragedies. As we reported a couple of weeks ago, the first UK Farm Aid, scheduled for 27 October in Cardiff, Wales, is off.
A Farm Aid spokesperson wrote on Friday about the US concert: “After much soul searching and consultation with people from across the country, we concluded that the best thing we can do at this moment is to demonstrate to the world the strength and vitality of American farmers and their important role in making this great country strong.” The concert went on as planned with performances by Neil Young And Crazy Horse, John Mellencamp, Dave Matthews (solo), Martina McBride, Arlo Guthrie, Chris Knight, and Acoustic Syndicate.
Among the victims of last month’s attacks were farmers and customers at several farmer’s markets operating at the World Trade Center or nearby. Most of those markets were destroyed.
Although many of us have already given generously to the American Red Cross, the United Way, or other charities in recent days, Farm Aid has asked Americans and other concerned individuals to contribute to help them restore the lost WTC markets. Should you wish to help, make your check out to 'Fund for World Trade Center Greenmarket Farmers' and send it to Famers Market Federation of New York, 2100 Park Street, Syracuse NY 13208. | Farm Aid | | Famers Market Federation of NY | | top of page |
