Erik Sanko releases solo debut set 19 November 2001 On the new album, Sanko, a fan of Captain Beefheart and Tom Waits, has assembled a delicate, cinematically-evocative masterpiece of despair, longing, and mystery. While minimalist throughout (he recorded the album in his apartment), Sanko manages to continually surprise with odd instrumental mixtures and a veritable catalog of vocal stylings and processings. The set manages to walk the wobbly tight wire of thematically-cohesive variations, with songs like short stories that could each inspire a novel but gel nicely into a single satisfying volume. Past Imperfect, Present Tense is extraordinarily introspective and low-key without descending into melancholy. At the same time it offers a generous helping of fresh and inspiring melodic hooks that stick in your head, and even a snippet of humor here and theresuch as on the poignant and goofy I Get Along Fine, which employs male & female synthetic voices from Apples now-so-retro System 7 MacInTalk era. Sankos solo debut is one of the best-kept pop secrets of the year, as well as one of 2001s important albums. Five bites out of five. Rockbites ratings 5: life changing, 4: stunning, 3: captivating, 2: amusing, 1: annoying. | Erik Sanko on Jetset | | Skeleton Key | | CD from Amazon US | | top of page | |
