Rock & Roll Librarys 1st annual Song Lesson contest 14 May 2001 Last month the RRL announced its first annual Song Lesson Contest, in which teachers are invited to submit original classroom lessonsfrom any academic subject areabuilt around a selected piece of music. The song chosen for 2001 is Melissa Etheridges Scarecrow from her 1999 album Breakdown, which tells the story of the 1998 attack, torture, and murder of gay college student Matthew Shepherd. The Rock & Roll Library has won endorsements from Amnesty International, The Matthew Shepherd Foundation, GLAAD, the NAACP, and other rights organizations. The grand prize for this years Song Lesson Contest is US$1,000 to the lesson author plus a visit by Etheridge to the winners school. The RRL is seeking sponsors, hoping to raise the prize amount for next year.
