Party For Peace seeks artists, sponsors for Belgrade concerts
11 May 2001

A couple of human-rights aware entertainment companies in England are working with like-minded folks in Belgrade and with the UN and NATO, against difficult and volatile political conditions, to bring the unifying and healing power of music to the people of war-ravaged Kosovo. Their goal is threefold: to thank NATO’s soldiers for their ongoing peacekeeping efforts, to help the region’s citizens celebrate progress to end 20 years of unrest and tragedy, and to raise funds to help undo some of the damage of war.
The Manchester based Party For Peace project hopes to stage a multi-venue event in Belgrade late this year, expected to attract upwards of 500,000 people and to be Webcast live. Among the artists who want to participate are Ian Brown, Pearl Jam, Super Furry Animals, Kylie Minogue, Cher, Texas, and Hank And The Hardknox. Plans call for a second concert to the south in Pristina, and a third 'homecoming' concert in Manchester, perhaps at the new Commonwealth Games stadium. Organizers plan to record the Manchester event for release on a benefit live CD with all proceeds going to UNHCR (the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) and to UNICEF (the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund).
If you are an artist or band that would like to perform, or a corporation that would like to sponsor the peace concerts, send email to participate@party-for-peace.co.uk.
