Sunnyvale, California’s Fishbowl goes under
1 May 2001

After three years and hundreds of Saturday night rock shows for area teens, the city of Sunnyvale, California has suddenly and unceremoniously shut down its Fishbowl concert series. The smoothly run program (we’ve attended twice recently and can attest to that), staffed by a dedicated team of local high school students, was unusual if not unique in the United States in providing a city sponsored, safe, and low-cost-to-free destination each weekend during the school year for teens seeking innovative music.
Here is the complete text of the poignant and—mostly—restrained message posted on the Fishbowl Web site this past Thursday

“The beginning of the end came Friday, April 20, 2001 when [22 year old manager/promoter] Eric Fanali’s assignment was ended. The following Wednesday, April 25, 2001, the Fishbowl was officially shut down for the rest of the 2000-2001 season. There was no mention of the program ending when Eric [was let go]—in fact, there was never any official word that he no longer held a job with the City of Sunnyvale. As of last Saturday, April 21, 2001, we were under the impression that the Fishbowl would be finishing out its third year of operation.
“In terms of what happened, there are things we can explain and things that we can only try to explain. First of all, the Fishbowl was shut down by people who have much more power than us. The Fishbowl is being shut down due to an overall lack of communication, bands who violated their contracts, low Sunnyvale participation, one particular person who continues to enter the [restricted] bakery part of the Fishbowl [venue during shows], and a combination of other factors.
“We are sorry that it had to end this way. We wish that we had more control but we obviously don’t. We never saw this coming; no one ever approached us with any problems. Perhaps this never would have happened; but it has and there is nothing we can do about it—there is nothing they will let us do about it. After all, we’re just a bunch of kids who put countless hours and infinite dedication into this program, our second home. Why should we have any say in things?
We, the Fishbowl crew, want to thank all of you who have come out to the shows for supporting us. You have made the past three years some of the best years of our lives. If you want to help out, we are starting a letter writing campaign that will reach Robert Walker, Sunnyvale Superintendent of Parks and Recreation. We don’t know if the Fishbowl will be brought back intact but anything we try can’t hurt. PLEASE write serious letters. Saying that this situation sucks won’t help. All letters can be sent to floating_penguins@purpleturtle.com or given to any member of the Fishbowl staff. We appreciate your help.
“This chapter of the Fishbowl’s history has ended. The Fishbowl may re-open [in some form] in September 2001. What it will be like is a mystery to us. Many of us are graduating seniors and will not be around next year, others are choosing to not be involved, and still others have been expressly told that they are to have nothing to do with the program ever again.
“Thanks for the memories. We will miss you all.”

Upcoming scheduled shows, which were posted for the next seven weekends, included Pollen, The KGB, Moodfrye, Oranger, Stunt Monkey, and several other bands. Fanali hopes to start up a new weekly series a few miles south in the city of Los Gatos very soon, perhaps in time to honor arrangements made with some of the 27 bands left hanging by the closing.
Rockbites encourages you to honor the dedication of the former Fishbowl staff by pursuing reasoned and dignified discourse with Robert Walker and his office. The mailing address for Robert Walker is Sunnyvale Parks & Recreation Dept., PO Box 3707, Sunnyvale CA 94088. To email him, check our link. The general information phone number for the City of Sunnyvale government is (+1) 408-730-7350. Their fax number is (+1) 408-730-7754. | Fishbowl | | email the City of Sunnyvale Parks & Rec. dept. | | City of Sunnyvale Parks Web site | | top of page |
