Web magnate to make Aryan compound a human rights center 8 March 2001 41 year old Idaho native Greg Carr, who made his millions founding and running the Prodigy Internet service, quit his job to become a full time philanthopist and human rights activist. Two years ago he founded the Carr Center For Human Rights Policy at Harvard University, and last year organized a statewide money-raising campaign to build The Anne Frank Human Rights Memorial in Boise. Commenting on Idahos reputation as a fascist hotbed, Carr told the New York Times last month Sadly, it really only takes a very few people, a tiny group, to give the entire state a bad image. Over the past year Carr has proven his point that Idahoans are good people, as individuals and corporations across the state met his challenge to raise US$500,000 for the Frank memorialcontributing to date more than $750,000. Carr is kicking in $500,000 of his own money for the project, which will feature a 175 foot granite wall emblazoned with images of, and quotations by, human rights leaders. Earlier this week Carr announced he had purchased the grounds and buildings of the former Aryan Nations compound near Hayden Lake, Idaho, which will now become a holocaust memorial and human rights conference center. Carr announced on Tuesday Were not just going to tear the place down and pretend it never happened and say, 'There, weve cleaned up our image as a state.' Were going to leave it there and acknowledge that this kind of hatred still exists and that well battle against it. The center will be an acknowledgment of the fact that weve got work to do. | New York Times story (registration required) | | earlier NYT story | | Aryan Nations backgrounder on Apologetics Index | | top of page | |
