Mr. Lady releases eclectic must-have compilation
5 March 2001

Durham, North Carolina feminist label Mr. Lady releases later this month their third LP-length compilation, the 18 track (plus a bit of a bonus) Calling All Kings & Queens. The very eclectic set’s very effective common thread is thought provoking, optimistic, heartfelt, high energy music. The disc unabashedly and very effectively embraces feminist punk, noisy emo, subversive folk, intense rock ballads, acid torch, erotic techno, and minimalist art pop.
Calling All Kings & Queens—blessedly without a trace of fluff or filler—features previously unreleased songs by Le Tigre, Californian Shelley Doty (of the Shelley Doty X-Tet collective, and formerly of Jambay), and Gretchen Phillips (of Meatjoy, Two Nice Girls, and The Gretchen Phillips Experience); plus live songs by The Butchies, Sleater-Kinney, and Amy Ray (of The Indigo Girls).
Also included are great tracks by PME with Ms. Vaginal Davis, Heart Beats Red, Kiki & Herb (covering Sleater-Kinney’s I’m Not Waiting), V For Vendetta, Oriflamme... and the list goes on.
As a label compilation, you’ll be able to pick up Calling All Kings & Queens for a good price, and we enthusiastically recommend that you do. Four bites out of five.

Rockbites ratings  5: life changing, 4: stunning, 3: captivating, 2: amusing, 1: annoying.
