Hole’s Courtney Love launches new band, sues Universal

36 year old Courtney Love (born Michelle Harrison), who first splashed onto mainstream media radar as Mrs. Kurt Cobain in the early ’90s, has announced that her new band Bastard is in an LA studio recording their debut album. The band features Louise Post (of Veruca Salt) on lead guitar, Patty Schemel (of Hole) on drums, Gina Crosley (of Rockit Girl) on bass, and Love on vocals & guitar. The album will likely appear this year on Epitaph Records.
Meanwhile, last month Love revealed a countersuit against music behemoth Universal Records challenging her contract. She hopes to do no less than set a precedent that could reframe the music industry.
Love has long been an advocate of musician’s rights. She made headlines last May at the Digital Hollywood conference in New York with a keynote speech that claimed the real thief and enemy of artists in music entertainment is not Napster, but the major record labels. “Authors own their books and license them to publishers. When the contract runs out, writers gets their books back. But record companies own our copyrights forever....”
Speaking to the Los Angeles Times last month, Love said “Look, you show a music industry contract to any lawyer in any other business, and their jaw just hits the floor. I’m ready to take this thing all the way to the Supreme Court.” Attorney Yale Lewis, who helped Jimi Hendrix’s father reclaim rights to his son’s catalog from MCA Records, told the Times “It is difficult to challenge a giant music company and go up against traditional industry practices, but there is no reason why Courtney can’t win this case. If this goes to trial, it will be a jury that decides the facts. Not the industry.” | Hole | | LA Times story on lawsuit | | Veruca Salt | | Rockit Girl | | top of page |
