Ad-Rock trashes Eminem’s 'ignorant' lyrics
22 March 2001

Missouri-born, Detroit-based rapper Eminem (Marshall Mathers) is an agent provocateur or an asshole or an avatar: your choice. He performed a duet of his poignant ballad Stan (the album version of which features triple-platinum heartthrob Dido) with the supremely gay Elton John at last month’s Grammy Award ceremony in Los Angeles. Following the song, the two embraced. Then, in an obvious taunt (so say us), Eminem said “I didn’t know Elton John was gay.”
Now Adam Horovitz aka Ad-Rock of The Beastie Boys, who at the MTV Awards in December 1999 publicly apologized for past homophobia on behalf of his band (perhaps at the prompting of his girlfriend Kathleen Hanna of Le Tigre, in the audience at the time), has commented to the press about Eminem’s lyrics.
Horovitz said “I think it’s pretty embarrassing for someone to go and say, 'This is my first Amendment right. This is my right as an American citizen to be ignorant and homophobic and sexist'.... OK, if that’s who you are and that’s what you want to be well I don’t want to listen to you... That’s my First Amendment right. I don’t give a shit.” | Eminem | | The Beastie Boys | | Grammys | | bio | | discography | | top of page |
