Melting Pot US desert festival: call for artists
20 March 2001

Organizers have just announced tentative plans for a two-day, free (or cheap) music festival to take place this summer in Jawbone Canyon, about 100 miles north of Los Angeles in the Mojave Desert. The 2001 Melting Pot Festival is being organized by the Los Angeles Hot Pants Club, which gained worldwide notoriety in December when The Breeders performed a reunion show there. Plans call for two days of music, magic, and peforrmance art with on-site camping—all free to attendees.
Sash and Christiane Hedrick have inherited the desert festival from former Flipside Magazine writer Gus Hudson, who staged it for several years. Past artists have included Beck, Fugazi, and Pop Defect. The Hot Pants Club is working to pay for everything through sponsors and on-site vendors.
Artists confirmed so far include LA-based bands who’ve played at Hot Pants: Kids Of Widney High, Tracy & The Hindenburg Ground Crew, Cockeyed Ghosts, DJ Mike Wikked, and Project K.
The festival hopes to attract a full roster of artists from the US, UK, and elsewhere. Going for something like a desert canyon version of England’s All Tomorrow’s Parties, they’ve told Rockbites they are extending invitations to, among others, Arab Strap, The Breeders, Elf Power, Enon, Fear, Fugazi, Grandaddy, Modest Mouse, Mogwai, Stereolab, Super Furry Animals, and Yo La Tengo.
Plans also call for the full festival to be Webcast live. If you want to serve on the organizing committee for Melting Pot, or want to perform, contact Sash or Christiane at hotpantsent@earthlink.net.
