San José, California experimental quintet Xiu Xiu (they took their name from Joan Chen’s 1998 film Xiu Xiu: The Sent-Down Girl) will be one of six bands playing the first of three planned benefit concerts on 30 June to raise funds for the non-profit Manchester, UK based Mines Advisory Group.
Founded in 1991, MAG teaches people how to clear landmines and bombs from populated areas throughout the world, focusing on the Laos-Vietnam border region. They estimate that active landmines are planted in 70 countries today. In 1997, as a member organization of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL), they received the Nobel Peace Prize along with ICBL director Jody Williams.
Tens of thousands of civillians, a disproportionate number of them children, are mutilated or killed each year worldwide by landmines.
The first benefit concert, sponsored by indie label Will It Burn Music and organized by Xiu Xiu founder Jamie Stewart, takes place 30 June starting 8 pm at The Stork Club in Oakland, California. Playing along with Xiu Xiu will be Deer Hoof, The Lies, The Owls, The Rum Diary, and The Sweet Science. All proceeds will go to MAG. The other benefit concerts in the series will be 28 July at Café Du Nord in San Francisco, and 8 September at a venue to be announced. | The Stork Club | | Mines Advisory Group | | ICBL | | Nobel prize info | | top of page |
