Memorial Services today, tomorrow for John Lee Hooker
27 June 2001
image
Public memorial services for blues legend John Lee Hooker take place today and tomorrow near Hooker’s family home in Oakland, California.
Born in Clarksdale, Mississippi in 1920, the extraordinarily influential singer/ songwriter/ guitarist died in his sleep last Thursday at home at age 83.
In the early 1930s, Hooker’s stepfather taught him to play guitar. At 14 the young musician ran away from home to seek fame in Memphis. Dismissed by clubs and other blues musicians because of his age, Hooker struggled for ten years before moving first to Cincinnati and then to Detroit—where he recorded his first tracks.
Hooker has been a hero to generations of rock bands including (among countless others) The MC5, The Doors, Canned Heat, The Who, The Rolling Stones, Los Lobos, Robert Cray, and Ben Harper.
