The Czars finish third LP, post docu-video, MP3 clip
22 June 2001

Denver slow-core quintet The Czars have finished recording their new album The Ugly People vs. The Beautiful People, produced with former Cocteau Twins guitarist/programmer Simon Raymonde and Giles Hall (Lush, The Auteurs, and previous Czars releases). The band expects the set to come out near the beginning of October on London indie label Bella Union. Guest musicians were trombonist Rick Benjamin, vocalist Paula Frazer (Tarnation, Cornershop), trumpet player Ron Miles, violinist Elin Palmer (ex 16 Horsepower), and pedal-steel player Glenn Taylor
They’ve just posted a 12 minute documentary video about the band, shot by Keiran Evans (Death In Vegas, David Gray). The video is not for the faint-of-connection speed: the “small” version is 56 MB, while the high quality version tops out at 144 MB.
Bella Union has posted a 54 second MP3 clip of Song To The Siren as performed by The Czars for the Tim Buckley tribute double album Sing A Song For You, released last September for the US and in April for the UK. Also playing on that set are Simon Raymonde, The Mojave 3, Dot Allison, Shelleyan Orphan, Mad Scene, Brendan Perry, and others—but notably not Coldplay, who were probably Manifesto Records first choice as obvious Buckley heirs but were not interested.
Upcoming Czars shows include a free, intimate, all ages performance at the Java Mountain Roasters Coffee House on 29 June in Idaho Springs, Colorado; and a 13 July show at The Boulder Theatre in Boulder.
Besides The Czars’ own Web site and that of their label Bella Union, you can get news on the band from Velveteen Records, founded by The Czars’ bassist and co-founder Chris Pearson. | The Czars | | Tim Buckley tribute CD | | Bella Union Records | | Song To The Siren (MP3 excerpt) | | Velveteen Records | | bio | | discography | | top of page |
