Xiu Xiu on tour of northwest US, Canada this week

San José, California experimental quintet Xiu Xiu—who we hope will be announcing their first album sometime this year—start a four day series of live shows tomorrow afternoon at Melaine’s House (6616 NE Martin Luther King Blvd) in Portland, Oregon, playing at a chili cookoff with Jonny & The Groadies, The Thrones, and Unsounds.
    The brief tour continues with shows in Vancouver, Olympia, and Seattle, after which the band head back home for a 28 July benefit concert for the Mines Advisory Group (MAG, a member of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines) at San Francisco’s Café Du Nord. Founded in 1991, MAG teaches local residents how to clear landmines and bombs from their living areas. Active throughout the world, MAG focuses on the Laos-Vietnam border region. They estimate that active landmines are planted in 70 countries today. Also playing the MAG benefit will be Deerhoof, Owls, The VelvetTeen, and Papercuts.
