J Mascis releases new single, posts MP3 B-side
3 July 2001

UPDATE J Mascis, guiding light for Boston grunge pop duo Dinosaur Junior and now pursuing his solo project J Mascis And The Fog, last month released the album track Waistin’ as a single. Taken fom his great 2000 album More Light (which features Guided By Voices’ Robert Pollard and My Bloody Valentine’s Kevin Shields), Waistin’ is a noisy dream pop anthem, slow and spacy but driving and darkly optimistic.
You may be able to find the limited edition 7" vinyl record, but it’s available as a CD with two backing tracks: the 1969 track Leaving On A Jet Plane by John Denver (née John Henry Deutschendorf) and the non-album Mascis hyper-punk track See It As Always—the latter just made available as a free MP3 download from Berlin’s City Slang Records through their MP3 Club program.
Mascis is recovering from a touring van crash that took place 17 June near Falkenberg while on tour in Sweden. He was hospitalized with two broken vertebrae and a great deal of pain, but is expected to fully recover. The rest of his touring band (including bassist Mike Watt, ex fIREHOSE; and drummer George Berz) got bruised up but didn’t need hospitalization. In May they’d been joined for some shows on the UK leg of their tour by Ron Asheton (ex Stooges), but he wasn’t with the band in Sweden.
If you’d like to send a get-well-soon wish to J, City Slang Records will forward it along to him—write to info@cityslang.com with “J Mascis” somewhere in the subject line. | J Mascis on City Slang | | MP3 Club | | Mike Watt (includes tour notes) | | bio | | discography | | sample | | top of page |
