(As a human rights oriented Web site—we’re here to raise funds for human rights as well as to expose cutting edge pop—Rockbites occasionally brings you non-music-related stories. Here’s one.)

Human rights advocacy organization Amnesty International yesterday published a major report on the state of racism around the world. The report focuses on racism in the administration of justice which, the group found, “...systematically denies certain people their human rights because of their colour, race, ethnicity, descent (including caste) or national origin.”
Amnesty conducts ongoing research on racism. In the new report they describe abuses in the United States, where judges still deliver the death sentence most often when the victim is white; in Australia, where documented reports describe the police treating aborigines with extreme disrespect: “In 1997 an Aboriginal woman complained to Northern Territory police that she had been raped by two men... Although a doctor confirmed she was a rape victim, she was taken to court in the rain, and locked in an uncovered cage on the back of a police van.”; in Rwanda, where seven years ago up to a million ethnic Tutsi civilians were slaughtered by ethnic Hutu; in India, with a first-person account of members of the Hindu caste burying alive a family of the Dalit caste; and the horrifying examples go on.
Amnesty prepared the report, titled Racism And The Administration Of Justice, for submission to the upcoming UN World Conference Against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia, And Related Intolerance which takes place 31 August - 7 September in Durban, South Africa. Themes for the conference are Trafficking in women and children, Migration and discrimination, Gender and racial discrimination, Racism against indigenous peoples, and Protection of minority rights.
