Second 2001 Tibetan Freedom Concert set for London
25 July 2001

The second 2001 edition of the nearly-annual Tibetan Freedom Concert (a small concert took place in Japan in May; the previous one in ’99) is set for 15 September at London’s Brockwell Park. Organizers say they will reveal the full lineup at the end of this month but as of today confirmed bands are The Beastie Boys, Morcheeba, Pulp, and Joe Strummer.
On the Free Tibet DVD, which documents the premiere Tibetan Freedom Concert held in San Francisco’s Golden Gate park back in 1996, Adam Yauch explains the motivation for the events. “Our government isn’t going to take a stand unless they’re forced to... so the only way that change is gonna come about is through mass public awareness. And the area that I’m able to help out with that is through music.”
And toward that end Yauch has invited Brit pop star Robbie Williams. He told the press this week “It’s great when we can find an artist with a fanbase who might not know so much about the situation in Tibet, or who doesn’t overlap with some of the other performers. That way, new people find out what’s going on.” A spokesman for Williams has said the artist has yet to confirm.
What is going on is the continuing occupation of Tibet by the government of the People’s Republic of China, and ongoing oppression, torture, rape, and murder committed in the name national unity. The Tibetan Freedom Concerts, whose mission is to raise awareness, also raise money for The Milarepa Fund. Milarepa’s mission is to support the Tibetan people’s nonviolent struggle to regain their freedom. It was founded with money earned from two songs off The Beastie Boys’ Ill Communication album. | Tibetan Freedom Concert | | The Milarepa Fund | | The Beastie Boys | | Free Tibet DVD | | top of page |
