The Verlaines’ Graeme Downes readies solo debut
8 January 2001

Graeme Downes, front man and founder of ’80s New Zealand guitar band The Verlaines, has signed with Matador for the release of his solo debut Hammers & Anvils. The new LP follows The Verlaines’ now out-of-print Way Out Where, released six years ago, and their 1996 Juvenilia compilation CD, available as an import.
Downes found time to put the new album together despite his day job at Otago University, where he lectures as a professor. Hammers & Anvils will hit stores sometime this year—we’ll bring you more details as we get them. | The Verlaines on Flying Nun | | top of page |
