Mogwai reveal name of third album, play new material
24 January 2001

Scottish post rock quintet Mogwai this past June became the first band signed to new UK indie label Southpaw, a subsidiary of Belgium’s Play It Again Sam (PIAS). Still associated with Matador in the US, the band have just revealed the name of their third album. It’s Rock Action, due early April on Matador and Southpaw. They recorded it in upstate New York with producer Dave Fridmann (Mercury Rev, Sparklehorse, The Flaming Lips).
A spokesperson at Matador who’s had a chance to hear some of the work in progress said “...I have a feeling this may become the most beautiful album I’ve ever heard (if not, as the band are calling it, The Most Expensive Post-Rock Album In History). Mogwai seem to be expanding their loud/soft guitarscapes into a symphonic sound based around guitar & piano but augmented with voice (yes, vocals), strings, brass, etc. and with a much more mature sense of dynamics.”
Mogwai have also just announced their first show for 2001, a one-off in Reykjavik, Iceland at Gaukurinn Hall on 14 March. It will be the first public exposure of their new material.
Three new songs apparently not on the forthcoming album—Untitled, Quiet Stereo Dee, and Arundel—are available on a strictly limited edition EP published as part of the Travels In Constants series. Normally available only by subscription—and last year’s series is long sold out—the Mogwai store (available on their Web site) will be selling a few of the EPs starting sometime in the very near future. | Mogwai | | Gaukurinn Hall | | Temporary Residence/Travels In Constants | | discography | | sample | | top of page |
