I Am Spoonbender play Cali dates, prep for world tour
2 January 2001

San Francisco experimental synthpop act I Am Spoonbender are playing a few California dates this month getting ready for a major US tour in March, to be followed by shows in Europe, Japan, and Australia. This week’s gigs are the first with new member Chad Amory who joins Dustin Donaldson (drums, synths, vocals) Cup (synths, vocals), Brian Jackson (bass, synths), and Marc Kate (synths).
The band are busy writing new material for the followup to their 1999 debut Sender/Receiver. The new stuff, they say, is “...much more voice oriented than in the past, giving way to a strong 'hypnotic, synthetic pop' feel”. They’re currently shopping for a label, sending around a demo containing the new songs Imposter (I’m You), Trivial Premonitions, and Complete With Trees.
The current mini-tour, a Gold Standard Laboratories Records showcase, started last night at The Nile Theatre in Phoenix and continues through Sunday. The tour’s rotating lineup includes various combinations of IAS with The Beautiful Skin, Defacto (members of At The Drive In), Go Go Go Airheart, Le Shok, The Locust, and Vue.
Then on 19 January I Am Spoonbender play San Francisco’s historic Great American Music Hall, their first ever headline slot there which they promise “...will be the biggest and most beautiful stage show we’ve assembled....” Also playing that show are Kid 606, Slaves, Wetgate, and Knights Over Egypt.
Here are I Am Spoonbender’s confirmed dates

January
2 - San Diego (The Che)
3 - Los Angeles (The Smell)
  4 - Anaheim (Chain Reaction)
7 - San Francisco (Bottom Of The Hill): DJ set
19 - San Francisco (Great American Music Hall)
