Le Tigre release new studio EP
16 January 2001

Next Tuesday, Chicago-New York techno/ punk/ pop/ feminist trio Le Tigre release their first new material since 1999’s breakthrough debut. Titled From The Desk Of Mr. Lady, the seven track CD-EP continues the band’s sardonic, off-kilter, retro-future approach to danceable pop with six peachy new tracks and one groovy remix by London based Zhark/Home Wrecker Foundation head Rachel Kozak.
The band are Kathleen Hanna (ex Bikini Kill, Julie Ruin), Johanna Fateman (Swim With The Dolphins, as well as a zine writer), and new member JD Samson, who replaces video artist Sadie Benning.
Standing far in front of the masses of indie bands for whom one has to apply some charity and faith when discerning their creative or social value, Le Tigre are bubbling over onto the floor and squirting out all over the walls with it. Their musical concoctions draw from The Spencer Davis Group, Steppenwolf, The Flying Lizards, the ’80s Riot Grrrl genre, power grunge, cheerleader wailing, and dozens of other tasty ingredients from the rock and roll kitchen—spicing it all with their own brand of cheerily aggressive, bitingly political, world-wise dance pop.
Check out this spoken bit (read by a sensitive male type) in the middle of new track Yr Critique:

Yeah babe, I know I make about twice the money you make
And of course I’m never called a stupid whore or a fake
And I don’t structure my life around fear of murder, dismemberment or rape
But I hardly see what that has to do with our relationship.

The EP’s tracks are Get Off The Internet, Bang! Bang!, They Want Us To Make A Symphony Out Of The Sound Of Women Swallowing Their Own Tongues, Yr Critique, Gone B4 Yr Home, Mediocrity Rules, and All That Glitters (Rachel Kozak remix). Yet another new track, Sweetie, appears on the forthcoming Mr. Lady records compilation Calling All Kings And Queens, slated for a 6 March release in the US.
Last word on the new EP: we’ll be playing this record a lot. Four bites out of five. | Le Tigre | | Bikini Kill | | Julie Ruin | | Sadie Benning | | bio | | discography | | CD | | top of page |
