Spooks release remixes single of film track
12 January 2001

US trip-hop quintet Spooks, who’ve released more material in Europe than back home, got a major break last year when Laurence Fishburne picked up Things I’ve Seen for the soundtrack to his directorial debut Once In The Life (a crime drama featuring Fishburne, Titus Welliver, Eamonn Walker, and Anabella Sciorra). The song comes from the band’s 2000 debut album S.I.O.S.O.S—Volume 1, and sees release as a US single featuring four remixes next week. Other versions of the single came out last year in March and December.
The band members (Ming-Xia, Hypno, Mr Booka-T aka Bookaso, Water Water aka Aqua Dinero, and J.D. aka Vengeance) are all fans of the spy genre, and bring some of its aesthetic into their act. None will reveal exactly where they come from or how the band formed, but they admit they got together in the eastern US.
Spooks’ music draws from the DIY honesty of The Roots as well as the groove scheme of Massive Attack. Vocalist Ming-Xia calls it “...conceptual hip-hop and ethereal rapping.” Lyrically, the band are more interested in social change than in misogyny or homicide, while musically, according to Hypno, “We use samples, we use guitars, we use drums, we use instruments that you would never even think of. We use stuff that’s not even an instrument and turn it into an instrument. It’s about danger, it’s about risk.” | Spooks | | bio | | discography | | CD | | top of page |
