Fuck to release fifth album in February
10 January 2001

As Rockbites reported in May, bicoastal (Oakland, California/New York city) band Fuck (Tim Prudhomme, Ted Ellison, Kyle Statham, and Geoff Soule) left Matador on good terms last year and signed with the Sonic Youth Records imprint Smells Like Records. They’re now all finished mixing their new album and have announced details.
Titled Cupid’s Cactus, the LP was recorded in San Francisco and Memphis. It runs a mere 35 minutes but offers up 15 songs: Glass Charms, High, Someday Aisle, Dandelion Ditch, Melt, Panties Off, San Jacinto, Awright, It’s Unbelievable, Never Alone, Flowers, Respond, How Do You Do Mr. Do, Oshun, and Cobra Lullaby.
According to the label, the new LP invites stylistic comparisons to an eclectic hodge-podge of influences including The Platters, Can, Pixies, and Meat Puppets. But since Midheaven Mailorder has 30-second RealAudio clips of every song up now, you can decide for yourself.
Cupid’s Cactus sees US release on Valentine’s Day (14 February), which as a Wednesday is a pretty odd fucking day for a record release in any country, if we do say so.
Besides maintaining a decidedly less than prolific release schedule—Cupid’s Cactus is their first LP in three years—the band don’t play out much. They have no scheduled dates, and in all of 2000 they played just one gig. However, reliable word has it that their live shows are extraordinarily memorable... so should Fuck choose to take to the road to support Cupid’s Cactus we suggest you check them out if at all possible.
Meanwhile, you might want to look into Geoff Soule’s side project wintermittens, who have released the album Unable To Leave A Message On A Delicate Matter. Details are available on the band’s Web site. | Fuck | | Fuck on Smells Like Records | | RealAudio clips on Midheaven | | wintermittens | | discography | | sample | | top of page |
