Future Of Music summit Webcasts now online
6 February 2001
image
Courtesy of Webnoize.com you can now watch online every presentation from the first day of last month’s Future Of Music policy summit, held in Washington, DC at Georgetown University. Keynoted by Senator Orrin Hatch, the summit brought together musicians (Chuck D of Public Enemy, Nicholas Currie aka Momus, David Fagin of The Rosenbergs, Kristin Hersh—ex Throwing Muses), journalists, lawyers, recording industry executives, and political figures to discuss reform of the music industry to benefit the vast majority of musical artists not served by existing infrastructure, policy, or laws.
The gathering sought to explore reform of music business models in light of technologies such as MP3 music compression and the Napster file sharing service; to consider solutions to the Recording Industry Association of America’s inherent conflict of interest—representing record companies while claiming to also represent artists; digital rights management, aka copy protection, as it applies to music product; and the severely hobbled US Low Power FM Initiative, which held the promise of helping to democratize American airwaves.
Presentations online now include, among others, Senator Orrin Hatch’s keynote, a music/technology state of the union roundtable discussion, and discussions on encryption & watermarking, the US’s recently adopted and highly controversial work-for-hire clause, and the digital millenium copyright act.
Webnoize will post the remaining presentations on 9 and 16 February. | Webcast | | Future Of Music Coalition | | Low Power Radio Coalition | | top of page |
