RAINN and the Grammys: unlikely bedfellows?
6 February 2001

Since 1994, the Washington, DC based Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network (RAINN) has operated a free, confidential counseling hotline for survivors of sexual abuse in the US. Available 24 hours a day, the number is 1-800-656-HOPE.
A nonprofit that doesn’t receive government funding, RAINN relies on individual contributions as well as celebrity and corporate assistance. Recording industry giant Warner Music Group, along with Atlantic Records, provided the initial funding for RAINN nearly seven years ago.
Now the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (NARAS), the folks who put on the annual Grammy Awards, has given RAINN two tickets to this month’s ceremony. They are on auction now, with 100% of the proceeds going to RAINN. The prize package also includes two tickets to the ultra exclusive after-ceremony Warner Music Group party.
Ultra-controversial Dr. Dre protegé Eminem has been nominated for four Grammy awards including Album Of The Year. A rumor has been circulating online that he will duet with entertainer and gay rights activist Elton John at the show, while others speculate he may not attend at all—he snubbed the awards last year.
In any case, a broad coalition comprising the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), the National Organization for Women, the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches, and several other groups, announced last month that they will rally and protest as guests arrive for the ceremonies. GLAAD executive director Joan M. Garry wrote “Eminem’s hate-filled lyrics have not only brought many people together in opposition, they’ve also raised the issue of corporate responsibility for marketing this kind of product. Our coalition’s presence at the Grammys will send a powerful message that hate in any medium will not go unchallenged. And we will show that fair-minded people will hold those who promote homophobia, misogyny, and violence against women and the community accountable for their words and actions.”
Should be a memorable show, if not one that makes a difference (though that would be nice, too.) You can bid online now for tickets to the 21 February ceremony at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. There are four days left until the auction closes. At press time, high bid was US$2,550. | RAINN | | Grammy tickets auction | | Grammys | | GLAAD press release | | top of page |
