5 February 2001

British soundtrack composer and former Pop Will Eat Itself front man Clint Mansell first collaborated with filmmaker Darren Aronofsky on the breakthrough 1997 psychological thriller π. The pair worked together again for Aronofsky’s 2000 release Requiem For A Dream (whose sexual content earned it a rare NC-17 rating).
Largely electronic, Requiem’s edgy, affecting, and bleak soundtrack features the San Francisco based Kronos Quartet as well as David Lang from New York experimental project Bang On A Can. It won last year’s Best Original Score honor from the Online Film Critics Society.
Thrive Records, an imprint of London/Sire, has announced it will release this spring a Requiem For A Dream remixes album including contributions by A Guy Called Gerald, Perry Farrell (ex Jane’s Addiction, Porno For Pyros), Hive, Paul Oakenfold, Photek, and more.
Mansell has already got two more film projects in the works. He’s written the score for Knockaround Guys, due later this year and starring John Malkovich, Dennis Hopper, Jennifer Baxter, and Vin Diesel. He’s also working on the soundtrack for British thriller The Hole, starring Thora Birch. Mansell will also play on the next Paul Oakenfold album, and is working on his solo debut. | Clint Mansell | | Kronos Quartet | | top of page |
