Female experimental pop reissues from Germany

Berlin’s Moabit Label, a subsidiary of Monika Enterprises, publishes reissues of innovative German experimental women’s pop from the ’80s and ’90s—in particular, the bands Malaria, Matador, and Miasma. The common thread among the releases is Berliner Gudrun Gut, who has played central roles in Einstürzende Neubauten, Matador, Malaria, Mania D, and Madame Bovary. Her current projects are the band/performance project Ocean Club and her label Monika Enterprises, which she founded in 1988.
    Miasma was the duo of Ms. Gut along with Banff, Canada native Myra Davies, who among other things has spent time as a union organizer, classical ballet producer, lawyer, and a mentor to seminal experimental noise band Skinny Puppy.
    Moabit has just signed on with Brussels based online retailer Atrecordings.com, which is very good news for those of us unfamiliar with these records: besides making the Moabit releases more easily available, Atrecordings posts all their albums online in high quality, streaming RealAudio—in full, not just clips.
    The current Moabit catalog offers eight releases—check their Web site—four of which are up on Atrecordings: Kaltes Klares Wasser by Malaria (a song from which, by the way, is currently charting in Europe as a remix featuring Chicks On Speed and Barbara Morgenstern), Ecoute by Matador, and Miasma and Miasma 2 by Davies and Gut. | Moabit on Atrecordings.com | | Moabit | | Monika Enterprises | | top of page |
