Spanic Boys move to Checkered Past, release 7th album
27 February 2001

Milwaukee roots/country rock act Spanic Boys, led by the duo of Tom (father) and Ian (son) Spanic on twin Fender Telecasters, have landed on Chicago’s Checkered Past Records for the follow-up to 1998’s Walk Through Fire. Torture is the band’s seventh album and was produced by Ian. It is a bit less the rockabilly/’50s rock of their eariler work, decidedly more country, and leans toward the darker side of things.
Drawing from some of the same influences that inspired The Beatles (Buddy Holly, Buck Owens, The Everly Brothers), Spanic Boys’ music ends up sounding a bit like the Fab Four in their more countryfied moments. Their trademark tight harmonies evoke The Everly Brothers, while their intricate guitar work (e.g. the opening to new track When You Fall) is rather reminiscent of retro-psychedelic Brit Robyn Hitchcock in his late Soft Boys/Early Egyptians period.
The tracks on Torture are When You Fall, Gotta Get Back, Little Lies, Doing What They Tell You, The Man Who Hates The World, Your Heart’s Not In It, Gonna Be Long Gone, Over You, Loser Blues, For Once In My Life, and She’s The Kind Of Girl. We’ve provided a direct link to a full-length MP3 version of Little Lies. | Spanic Boys | | Spanic Boys on Checkered Past | | Spanic Boys on Rounder | | Little Lies (full length MP3) | | discography | | CD | | top of page |
